Louis Addae-Wireko

Secretary & GIS/Remote Sensing Specialist

Mr. Louis Addae-Wireko has more than ten years of experience in natural resource management and the use of geo-information science for natural resource management. He has done natural resource projects in GIS, remote sensing of the environment, and the use of unmanned aerial systems.

He has lectured at the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources (KNUST) for fourteen years. At KNUST, he helped coordinate the joint MSc in GIS for Natural Resources Management Programme between KNUST and the University of Twente (formerly the International Institute for Geo-Information and Earth Observation) in Enschede, the Netherlands, and also organized several training and refresher courses. Also, he assisted in teaching courses in GIS, remote sensing of the environment, and the use of unmanned aerial systems for remote sensing at the Texas A&M University. He is a Fulbright and KAAD Scholar and became co-director of Texas A&M University’s Academy for Future Faculty (Centre for Teaching Excellence) for two years. He is a member of the Ghana Institute of Foresters and a founding member and executive of the Ghana Geospatial Society.

Projects & TASKS

Degree of responsibility: Consultant (GIS expert on the project)

Role within project: Led all mapping-related tasks within this project by producing species maps, generated with ArcGIS version 10.7, and calculated the Area of Occupancy (AOO), following the IUCN’s mapping and documentation standards (IUCN, 2019) for calculating Area of Occupancy (AOO) using the IUCN RedList Toolbox (2019_08 version) for ArcMap.

2021: GIS mapping for better livelihoods and forest landscape management project in Ghana: Establishing a landcover baseline for the monitoring of tree cover restoration on farms and assessment of conversion pressure on surrounding forest.

Funding source: Rainforest Alliance, Ghana

Degree of responsibility: Consultant (One of two GIS and Remote sensing experts on the project)

Role within project: Access of imagery databases and processing of satellite imagery to produce required outputs

2020-Date: Preliminary biodiversity and hydrological studies at the Atewa Forest Reserve.

Funding source: EPA / GIADEC

Degree of responsibility: Consultant (GIS expert on the project)

Role within project: Led mapping-related tasks within this project by producing Landuse/ Landcover and change maps, updating of current streams and rivers map, mapping location of plants, animals and sampling points for the study.
